Janet Whitaker, 72, of Hamilton, IL, passed away Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at 7:05 A.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk. She was born on November 27, 1938 in Joliet, IL, a daughter of Frank and Dorotha Bivens Kavanagh. She married Kenneth “Duck” Whitaker on May 19, 1957 at the United Methodist Church in Hamilton, IL. He survives in Hamilton.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons: Randyl Whitaker of Hamilton, IL and Kenneth Whitaker of Hamilton, IL and fiancé, Angie Baker; two brothers: Gerald H. (Joyce) Biggs of Showlow, AZ and Roger L. (Judy) Biggs of Indianapolis, IN; grandchildren: Lacey Whitaker and fiancé, Adam Dilbeck of Bloomington, IL; Jesse Whitaker of Vance Air Force Base, Enid, OK; Rikke Whitaker of Hamilton, IL; Wesley and Nicholas Whitaker, both of Hamilton, IL; two daughters-in-law: Jacque Whitaker and Nancy Whitaker-Kropp of Hamilton. She was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Dorotha Kavanagh and her father, Herbert Biggs.
Janet graduated from Hamilton High School in 1956 and attended beauty school. She remained a licensed beautician for many years. She was a longtime member of United Methodist Church in Hamilton. She had been active in various women’s groups. She enjoyed playing bridge with her bridge group, bowling, antique shopping and traveling. She was a member of Red Hat Society and Montebello Floral Society. She and her husband, Duck, were voted Hamilton High School Sports Boosters of the Year. She was an excellent cook and loved holidays, especially Christmas. Janet was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, never missing her children’s or grandchildren’s activities.
Janet and Duck had owned and operated Whitaker’s Market in New London, Iowa and Duck’s Red Fox in Hamilton and Nauvoo Illinois for many years.
Services will be held on Sunday, May 1, 2011 at 1:00P.M. at the Hamilton United Methodist Church with Pastor Shawn Whitaker officiating. Burial will follow at the Oakland Cemetery in Hamilton.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2011 after 1:00P.M. with family meeting friends between 4:00 and 8:00P.M. at the Lamporte-St.Clair Funeral Home of Hamilton
